Bobbi's Tomcat
The TommyknockersBobbi’s Tomcat is a modified tractor whose ability to hover turns a familiar farm machine into a practical vehicle for moving through the woods. It carries Bobbi and Gard to the excavation, its ordinary utility reframed by the strange transformations spreading through Haven: the machine is at once transportation and a visible sign that Bobbi’s technological ingenuity has crossed into the uncanny.
From Farm Machine to Digging Equipment
The Tomcat belongs to a landscape where machinery is being remade around the buried spacecraft. Bobbi’s old truck has been rebuilt into a digging machine, audible in Haven Village during the hot spell from July 12 through July 19, while the excavation site holds a souped-up payloader with a giant screwdriver-like nose and an array of heavy tools. Against this rough industrial setting, the Tomcat’s later hovering flight represents another, more intimate transformation of familiar equipment.
A Quiet, Low-Flying Vehicle
Bobbi and Gard ride the Tomcat out to the dig. It cruises silently about eighteen inches above the ground, with its large wheels turning slowly like propellers. Rather than soaring high into the sky, it stays close to the terrain; that low, controlled flight smooths the ride and makes the machine useful on the rough route through the woods. Gard drives, while Bobbi stands behind him on the yoke. The vehicle’s movement is responsive and precise. When Gard reaches a high stump, he pushes the gear lever fully forward, raising the Tomcat another three inches so it can skim over the obstacle. Once they have passed it, he eases his hand and the machine settles back to its usual height. Its extraordinary capacity is presented through practical handling: it lifts only as much as needed, then returns to its quiet course.
The Ride and Bobbi’s Sister
During the journey, Gard asks whether Bobbi’s sister has left. Bobbi says that she has, then describes how her sister came to bring her home, arriving with a bit and hackamore. Bobbi says there was a time when her sister might have taken her, but that she had no chance now. The Tomcat carries them forward as this conversation exposes a change in the balance between the sisters: Bobbi’s words make Gard feel cold, because they suggest how completely the situation—and Bobbi herself—has changed. The machine does not simply convey the pair to the excavation; its quiet, effortless passage gives the exchange a disquieting calm. Gard manages the obstacle in their path with a small adjustment of the controls, while Bobbi speaks of her sister’s failed attempt to take her away. The contrast makes the Tomcat’s controlled motion feel inseparable from the larger loss of control over what Bobbi has become.
Significance
The Tomcat marks the point where extraordinary invention enters everyday movement. Its low flight is not a spectacle for its own sake: it solves the immediate problem of getting Bobbi and Gard to the dig, and its careful response to the stump makes the impossible seem operational. That matter-of-fact usefulness is part of its unease. A tractor that once belonged to ordinary rural life now moves without touching the ground, carrying its riders toward the buried ship and through a town whose residents and surroundings are changing.
